I think that it is very unlikely the mother was in a healthy, right state of mind, when she decided to jump from the building. In fact, the whole premise for her decisions seem counterintuitive: She was worried that she might have caused some permanment disability or health issue for her son, so she decided to kill him along with herself. I cannot even fathom how her husband must be coping to this tragedy--to have lost his wife and almost his son--but it is certainly good that the child was able to survive the fall. It is very sad to hear stories such as this, especially since the woman seemed to have such a happy life (good marriage, comfortable income, etc.).

To apply this story to some of the ideas presented in the text, I think that this suicide could not be morally or rationally justified. In fact, the mother herself acknowledged that she felt what she was about to do was "evil": It seems that the experts have successfully attributed her decision to jump to postpartem psychosis, which caused her to lose touch with reality. It is just really unfortunate that someone close to her was not able to detect her mental state and encourage her to seek therapy or help.

A 26 year old mother from Tenn. was convicted today for smothering her twin boys after giving birth to them in her parents bathroom. In the article it stated that the woman, Lindsey Lowe, said that she didn't really know that was giving birth because she tried to block out the idea that she was pregnant (because the twins were conceived during an affair). I feel that regardless of if she knew that she was giving birth or not, that doesn't give any explanation or validity to her smothering the twins after giving birth to them. I don't understand how someone could do this to their own children. I feel that if she didn't want to keep the babies because they were from an affaire, then she should have taken them to a hospital, medical center, fire department or police station, adoption agency, and so on. These are some examples of "safe havens" for unwanted babies. There was no reason for this woman to kill her children, especially with these options available.

    1. this story really annoys me and i completly agree with roslyn. if you have sex there is a chance you can get pregnant and if you are 26 years old you should really be intelligent enough to recognize this. there were so many options for these babies to live happy healthy lives and this idiot could be mature enough to allow that for them. my view may be radical but i hope the prosecutor seeks the death penalty.

  3. I read the article pertaining to the young mother killing herself and attempting to kill her baby as well.
Reflecting back on our class discussion and how we defined "suicide"--I believe she definitely committed an act of suicide, as well as an attempted act of murder. This is a case when someone's suicide is almost overlooked as "tragic" in lieu of how horrible her other act was. The fact that she strapped her own innocent child to her body is just truly appalling.
I am left wondering where her husband was in all of this... Many people reflect that they "saw the signs" of a suicidal person but never took note of it or any action. Surely this mentally ill/deranged woman exhibited signs of being unstable. If there is one positive thing that can come from the situation, it is that the child did survive the ordeal. I can only imagine how her family must be coping with all of this news.

It is a scary world we live in when the leader of a country continually comments that he is going to rain fire down on a country of 300,000,000+ people. I really cannot even comprehend any aspect of his angle for such comments. Even if North Korea did manage to attain the wherewithal to develop long range missiles to attack the United States, would he really opt to use them and re-initiate the Korean War? What does he hope to gain from such claims? Hopefully, this is just a bluff on the part of Kim Jong Un and a poorly veiled attempt to gain credibility as powerful in eyes of North Koreans. Oh, and did I mention that the majority of the country is starving so that he might finance the tests and development to attempt to substantiate some of his ludicrous claims.

The reason why I decided to post this was to comment on the seeming complete disregard for life today. Kim Jong Un has made it clear he would be perfectly content killing tens of thousands of people for some political purpose, peaceful people with lives and families, cares and concerns. I will be the first to admit I am afraid of dying and I would really not be okay if it came at the hands of someone like Kim Jong Un. Why is peace so impossible?

  5. RE:Young Mother Kills Herself
Really? I do not understand her justification; if she believes she is such a bad mother then why couldn't she fix it through other means (I mean come on, she made nearly 200,000 annually)? In relation to death and dying, I believe this was an attempted murder. Her intentions were to kill the baby through means of her suicide. It is really dis-heartening to hear that a mother could think like this; but like Michael S. said she may not have been in the right state of mind. I agree she may have been mentally unstable but insanity is no justification for murder.

  6. I'm a history major, therefore, I think the article about the holocaust was the most interesting. It is still a tragedy that this could ever happen but the results that are still being discovered are really cool to me. Thinking about what has come from the deaths of this era of terror has sparked interest in me with this class because I want to know what happened to those people's lives after they were killed because I would imagine they had different ideas of a funeral and afterlife. So maybe some thought they did not pass on completely until their body was in a peaceful resting place. That's a pretty messed up thought because those bodies and people were all disrespected and deserve to be laid to rest in a respectful way; it is too late to even tell who those people are though is the sad part. It's just sad we live in a world of tyranny.
